Biography of Skip James

Skip James was born on June 9 , 1902 in Bentonia , Mississippi . He studied the guitar when he was young until he became a master . When he was eight , many people called him ** Skippy ** that was his nickname. He learnt piano in high school and he played piano and organ in the church <> people said he looked like happy to do that .
His mother was not mentioned in any of the sources. His father was said to be " a local lowlife " because he abandoned the family . The next , Skip James moved to the city of Jackson where was twenty miles east of Bentonia . He attended toadivinity school and became active in ministry work from the mid - twenties . He became an ordained Methodist minister in 1946 .
James said that he recorded for twenty - six masters <> in 1931 . However someone said eighteen masters were cut because he was not paid for this work that 's effect to a lack of sales . Then , he moved to Texas where he formed a gospel group . John Fahey who found him in 1964 . He took him to the Newport Folk Festival Fahey discovered him in a hospital in Tunica , Missisppi . His rediscovery was a dream come to because someone thought he didn't want to sing again . Repeat Chorus Five Times

When I read and search the biography of Skip James and musical works I think his song is the country song but when I finish from listening both of Crow Jane and Devil Got My Woman . It will stress song more than music . It's very difficult to listen and know the meaning . Sometimes I think this music similar to idia music HaHa!!!! . It has a low tone but I think He is good guy he is an obstract man . He can adapt himself with everywhere because he always move to many places .

What can I say, Nui? I am impressed. I love the Blues, and it is a big part of America and world music history. Everything you wrote about, is true with many early Black Blues artists. They played in "Juke Joints," where they served alcohol and danced. Black churches did not like the Blues or "Juke Joints," and that is how Juke Boxes got their names. Ask C. about Juke-Boxes.

Harmonicas, which I play, electric guitars, specially made guitars with hubcap centers, to give the guitar twangy sounds, were common among Blues Masters. Also, in the churches, in the 50s, the great Hammond Organs, were used. I have been to many African American Funerals, and they know how to bury their dead. I wanted Holli to take organ lessons from a preacher's wife in Anadarko, but they moved away.

Yes, yes, yes! Early black artists were cheated out of their songs. Pat Boone was terrible about doing that, but BMI and other music organization, has forced music companies to pay up for "covering" Blues masters songs, without paying for them. You know what, Europeans liked Delta Blues, before the US did.

Again, the movie "Ray" is a great and accurate portrayal of the Black Blues Artists. Unfortunately, most of them did not know how to read, and they never took guitar lessons, so they just developed their own style. Do a google on "Chess+blues."

I watched a live presentation of "Prairie Home Companion" last night. They had a D-2 Hammond organ, a flat picker guitar man, who also used a glass finger insert, to make the guitar ring. They had a great Blues singer on there and a great Gospel Quartet, where the guy that looks like Bro. Cec, was the bass. He's a great bass! Bro. Cecil, cannot sing bass.

Now, all of the above came out of Black BLues America, all derived from Delta Blues. Delta? What does that mean?

Well, ... the Delta is the land around a river. The river floods, and when it goes back into its regular banks, the land is left with a new top soil, which is great for planting. And out of this Delta, came the Music of the Delta, which is Blues. And out of the Blues, came a different, more complex part of Blues, called, "Jazz." And last night, the guitar player, did an absolutely great Jazz number on his guitar. Yes, Cec, we burned it. Yes, we will send you a copy.

The program is about the Bible, but only is a story, or parable from the Bible. It is excellent, excellent. So, that will be another DVD we will be sending Cecil as well as a DVD Pow Wow. You students are the luckiest students in Thailand, because I share all the interests that you do.

Thanks for writing about Skip James. It keeps him alive and well. I hope you get to hear Lighten' Hopkins on the First, SOUNDER, movie. He's incredible.

Oh, I forgot. What we do on the 4th of July is, we attend a Pow Wow in Carnegie, where Iris will dance. Last year I drove over there by myself, in the morning, but I will wait until Marcella gets off work, tomorrow.

Yesterday, Marcella went with our other two adopted grand kids and drove to El Reno to watch "Cars." Marcella hadn't seen it, but this was the 2nd time that they saw it. So, tomorrow, we will be "Pow Wowing."

Nui,
Go to my question blues blog and look what I have added. That is my son, sitting next to a real Bluesman, named Taj Mahal. He was responsible for the music on both Sounders. He had a concert at the Zoo Amphitheater, earlier this week.

Darrin and a friend named, Chris, who is kin to Eddie Davis, are making a documentary on Jesse Ed Davis.
